This portrait of Dennis Garcia, a Chumash elder, is a keeper of the cultural and history the Chumash and Tataviam people as a storyteller, singer and dancer. Professionally he is an actor appearing in motion pictures and television series. He has served as a resource to Native American studies at colleges. His ancestors--Tataviam, Chumash and Vanytume, lived in the Santa Clarita, San Fernando Valleys as well as part of Ventura county. His father, Ted C. Garcia, and grandmother, Chief Mary Cooke Garcia, lived in Newhall and are direct descendants of individuals who lived at Chaguayabit village (now Castaic) prior to European contact ins 1769. Ted's great, great, great grandfather Santiago Garcia was born to American Indian and California parents about 1833 when the Mission Period ended.
