Just before the turn of the century I ventured out to the Antelope Valley north of Los Angeles, California. to photograph a prolific bloom of the state’s flower, the California poppy. A little research turned up the fact it was adopted as the state flower in 1903. I also learned that the Native Americans used the plant for medicinal purposes, cosmetics and in cooking. As I drove around I spotted this old hay rake with a field of poppies below, a reminder of the areas agricultural enterprise.
