It was at a powwow before the turn of the century when I first met Saginaw Grant.  I was photographing dancers and talking to elders when I was introduced to  Saginaw, an ex-Marine by another former marine..  I offered him tobacco and he graciously accepted.  We talked and he even signed a photo release.  With his permission I was able to place one of his stories along with a picture I had taken of him in the winter 2000 issue of Rattle, a poetry magazine.  Over the years since that first encounter I had occasion to photograph him many times as he continued to participate in Native American gatherings. With his passing in the summer of 2021 he won’t be physically at the powwows, but I am sure I will feel his presence.
