Powwows bring Native Americans of all tribal heritages together. During a powwow in Oxnard California, a statement made over and over was how this was taking place on land that was once home of the Chumash. It seemed fitting that a large number of the dancers and singers were celebrating their heritage in their ancestral home. While looking at the pictures I took, I couldn’t help envision the ancestors looking on at the gathering. A picture came to mind of a transparent image of one of the dancers representing the ancestors, stepping from the sea. In my readings and talks with Chumash elders and storytellers I had learned that the Chumash were also known as the Seashell people, for not only being hunters and gathers but people also living off the sea.
